{"id":52052,"date":"2023-12-18T10:55:54","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T15:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/?p=52052"},"modified":"2026-03-06T21:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T02:11:46","slug":"les-clefs-dor-concierge-the-quintessence-of-hotel-service-since-1952","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/en\/travel\/les-clefs-dor-concierge-the-quintessence-of-hotel-service-since-1952\/","title":{"rendered":"Les Clefs d\u2019Or Concierge, the quintessence of hotel service since 1952"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s quite possible that you don\u2019t know what the Clefs d\u2019Or Concierge are, but I first heard about them when I was studying hotel management at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merici.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coll\u00e8ge M\u00e9rici<\/a>, when a lecturer, Anne McKenna, was head concierge at the <a href=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/en\/travel\/fairmont-le-chateau-frontenac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairmont Le Ch\u00e2teau Frontenac<\/a> and a member of the Clefs d\u2019Or, the International Union of Hotel Concierges. To find out more, I spoke to Claude Parenteau-Rodriguez, concierge at the <a href=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/en\/travel\/sofitel-montreal-golden-mile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sofitel Montr\u00e9al Le Carr\u00e9 Dor\u00e9<\/a> and Vice-Regional Director of Les Clefs d\u2019Or for Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les Clefs d\u2019or Concierge, what is this\u2009?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N35dkHObcwk?si=P92h5jvT_KnXmeoM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLes Clefs d\u2019Or Concierge\u201d is a professional association of hotel concierges with around 4,000 members working in more than 80 countries and 530 destinations, literally in the four corners of the world. If you\u2019re a regular hotel guest, you\u2019ll no doubt know what a hotel concierge is. For those who don\u2019t, they\u2019re customer service specialists, so there\u2019s no link with those who do the cleaning in some establishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les Clefs d\u2019Or, whose origins date back to 1929, was officially founded in France in 1952 as a non-profit organization based on two pillars: service and friendship. Before being awarded the right to wear the Clefs d\u2019Or, aspiring members must have several years\u2019 experience as hotel concierges, pass comprehensive tests and prove beyond doubt their ability to provide a service of the highest quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easily identifiable by the gold Bucherer crossed keys they wear in their lapels, these members form an elite, globally connected fraternity committed to professional development and to setting new standards of perfection in customer service, as I mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Origin of Les Clefs d\u2019Or Concierge<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-52056\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-dOr-Concierge-Bucherer.jpg\" alt=\"Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-d'Or-Concierge---Bucherer\" class=\"wp-image-52056\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-dOr-Concierge-Bucherer.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-dOr-Concierge-Bucherer-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-dOr-Concierge-Bucherer-114x114.jpg 114w, https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-dOr-Concierge-Bucherer-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Buttonhole-Les-Clefs-dOr-Concierge-Bucherer-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Clefs d&#8217;or buttonhole by Bucherer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was in the mid-1920s that a group of concierges from various Parisian hotels began to come together under the leadership of Pierre Quentin at the Ambassador in Paris (now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriott.com\/en-us\/hotels\/paroa-paris-marriott-opera-ambassador-hotel\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 26 October 1929, Mr.&nbsp;Quentin sent an invitation to 20 eminent concierges from all over Paris to dine at the No\u00ebl Peters restaurant in the hope of strengthening the ties that bound them together. The restaurant was located opposite his hotel, in the Passage des&nbsp;Princes. With 11 participants, this dinner marked the first meeting of professional hotel concierges as a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within four weeks, the new association is ratified at the very first general meeting, attended by more than 75 delegates. Pierre Quentin was elected the first president of the Clefs d&#8217;Or on 27 November 1929, a post he held for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While war raged and all the hotels in Paris were occupied, the association was put on pause to resume its activities in force after the 39\u201345 war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After numerous communications and several smaller meetings (including the first multinational meeting in 1951 in Sierre, <a href=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/en\/travel\/switzerland-between-city-and-nature-with-jean-michel-dufaux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Switzerland<\/a>), the meeting of the first six member sections took place on the historic date of 25 April 1952, at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes. This event gave birth to the Union Europ\u00e9enne des&nbsp;Portiers des&nbsp;Grands H\u00f4tels \u201cLes Clefs d\u2019Or,\u201d the international network as we know it today, and it was the very first multinational Congress. Adding many countries to its membership over the years, Canada joined the ranks of \u201cLes Clefs d\u2019Or\u201d in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les Clefs d\u2019Or Concierge in Canada<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing you need to know is that not all concierges are Clefs d\u2019Or members. To become a member, in addition to the tests and examinations, the concierge must have 5 years\u2019 seniority in the hotel industry, including 2 years as a full-time concierge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Clefs d\u2019Or network is the force behind the association. Restaurant suggestions are not made on the basis of rebates or commissions on bookings; it will really be a recommendation based on the customer\u2019s expectations and requests. Also, with this network, if a customer wants a seat quickly in a restaurant that\u2019s in high demand, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maisonboulud.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maison Boulud<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ritzcarlton.com\/en\/hotels\/yulrm-the-ritz-carlton-montreal\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ritz-Carlton H\u00f4tel Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, I can easily contact the concierge there to facilitate access to a table. It\u2019s the same thing for a customer travelling to Canada: it\u2019s easy to organize an exceptional stay for our guests with all the different members of the organization in the country or even abroad,\u201d says the concierge at Sofitel Montr\u00e9al Le Carr\u00e9 Dor\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does it mean for a hotel to be part of Les Clefs d\u2019Or?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor a chain like Sofitel, which wants to have a Clefs d\u2019Or concierge in each of its properties, it\u2019s the impeccable ethics that are important. In fact, there are two Clefs d\u2019or concierges at Sofitel. We can also support and train other concierges who are not Clefs d\u2019Or members in the way they deal with customers, in accordance with the hotel\u2019s various policies, of course,\u201d explains Mr. Parenteau-Rodriguez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The network, a strength<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many trades compete with each other to be the best, the Clefs d\u2019Or\u2019s strength lies in meeting each other and forging links to ensure that their customers have the best possible experience. \u201cWe have monthly meetings where we invite different suppliers (festivals, helicopter tours, etc.) to find out more about their services. This helps our members to get to know everything that\u2019s new in Montr\u00e9al so that they can present it to their customers. After this presentation, we discuss our new experiences (restaurants, exhibitions, etc.) with other Clefs d\u2019Or members to share with the network. It\u2019s important to point out that the Clefs d\u2019Or is a network of volunteers,\u201d adds the hotel industry veteran. He goes on to say that he wouldn\u2019t send a customer looking for the best authentic Italian sandwich to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.restaurant-toque.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toqu\u00e9<\/a>, just as he wouldn\u2019t send a customer looking for the most upmarket restaurant in Montr\u00e9al to La Banquise. \u201cIt\u2019s all about knowing your customer and your city, and that\u2019s what\u2019s most important in our work, giving the best service to each customer according to their expectations and requests,\u201d adds the Mont\u00e9regian by birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From University to Clefs d\u2019Or concierge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My interviewee began his career alongside his studies in social sciences at university, working as a night auditor in a hotel on the Plateau Mont-Royal. It was by listening to an insomniac guest who kept him company, while his colleagues found her a nuisance, that he climbed the ladder to the evening reception desk. It was there that one of his colleagues told him about the concierge profession and the Clefs d\u2019Or. Knowing only his namesake, who is more involved in housekeeping, he became more interested in the concierge profession, a profession he practised at the Westin Montr\u00e9al while at the same time taking steps to obtain the title of Clefs D\u2019Or concierge, before taking up his current position at the Sofitel Montr\u00e9al Le Carr\u00e9 Dor\u00e9. In the future, he sees himself as head concierge and wants to share his passion and know-how with the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, congratulations to our
