For the holidays, we wanted to hear from some of Gentologie’s friends and collaborators. We asked them how they celebrated their Christmas. We called this \u2018The Gentleman’s Christmas of…\u2019 because Christmas is all about being a gentleman (if you’re wondering how, we have some tips here<\/a>). We continue this series with The Gentleman\u2019s Christmas of Clusier, featuring Mr. Jean-Michel Bonin, owner of the men\u2019s boutique in Old Montr\u00e9al (he gave us tips last year on what to wear for the holidays<\/a>) and Mr. Richard Schmeller, made-to-measure specialist, again at Clusier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does Christmas mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean-Michel Bonin:<\/strong> For me, Christmas is a magical time when we can gather as a family, give, share and create wonderful memories for the children. My son will soon be 2 and this will be his first Christmas unwrapping presents!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard Schmeller:<\/strong> Christmas is a chance to pause and savour the company of loved ones, to engage in cherished customs, to share laughter or relish peaceful moments, and to appreciate all that surrounds. I love that Christmas encourages us to look back at the past year, to express gratitude, and to anticipate the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is Christmas spent in your family?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JMB:<\/strong> My entire family gathers at my parents\u2019 residence. We speak enthusiastically, tell jokes, burst into song, overindulge in food, and take turns opening gifts meticulously, ensuring that each person can see what every other recipient has received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RS:<\/strong> Often, it\u2019s very traditional, with beautiful family get-togethers. No need for complexity; just some downtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does your family eat at Christmas?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JMB:<\/strong> Each year, my father devotes about 24 hours to making the traditional Christmas meal: a tourti\u00e8re from Lac-Saint-Jean. We also serve homemade beetroot and a selection of cold cuts and cheeses. My mother contributes a range of three-generation family recipes, including a multitude of cookies and sweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RS:<\/strong> For us, it\u2019s been customary to enjoy Schwartz\u2019s smoked meat as part of our Christmas Eve dinner for many years. At Christmas, we typically enjoy a roasted meal, with options such as turkey or ham, accompanied by mashed potatoes, stuffing, Brussels sprouts and a spicy cranberry sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does your family drink at Christmas?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JMB:<\/strong> The wine is always flowing! I like to bring a magnum of Haut-M\u00e9doc or Burgundy, as nothing beats a celebratory format for the holiday season! This year, I have chosen Ch\u00e2teau Sociando-Mallet 2020, as well as some timeless cocktails: gin and tonic, whisky sour, and the classic Sidecar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RS:<\/strong> You can always have mulled wine or mulled cider, as well as many delicious cocktails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would you like to receive for Christmas?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JMB:<\/strong> I usually struggle to come up with gift ideas for myself, but this year, I\u2019ve decided on a fragrance and some home essentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RS:<\/strong> A new acoustic guitar would be much appreciated. Or a whole day watching football with my girlfriend and playing with my dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 What do you like to give at Christmas?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JMB:<\/strong> I make a point of fulfilling everyone\u2019s Christmas wish list, but I also like to include a pair of Marcoliani socks as a special gift for my closest loved ones! (Socks in Christmas stockings!) (Editor\u2019s note: Clusier offers an extraordinary variety.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RS:<\/strong> I strive to find personal and significant gifts, but some years are easier than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your Christmas wishes for Gentologie readers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JMB:<\/strong> I’d like to wish all readers a happy Christmas and a great festive season with the family. Use this downtime to unplug from screens and focus on work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RS:<\/strong> My hope for your readers is that they find peace, joy and connection during this festive season. I hope they are in the company of people who make them feel cherished and that they find enchantment in the smallest of moments. The New Year undoubtedly brings them fresh chances for growth, happiness, and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
