On board an MSC Cruises ship, everything begins in a port terminal \u2014 often vast, sometimes impersonal \u2014 where hundreds, even thousands of passengers wait in organized queues, luggage at their feet or entrusted to the handling service (in which case, expect a few hours before finding it in your cabin). It’s efficient. It’s well-oiled. But it isn’t prestigious \u2014 you are a number among thousands, unless you’re in the MSC Yacht Club, where you have your own fast track. For a ship that can accommodate nearly 7,000 people, logistics are inevitable, and they begin the moment you arrive at the dock. The excitement, however, is very real: the architecture is spectacular, the atria are breathtaking, and the feeling of belonging to something grand, vibrant, and international sets in immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n

With Explora Journeys \u2014 where you’ll find my full experience in this article<\/a> \u2014 embarkation is an entirely different affair. Having joined the cruise mid-journey in Antigua, the wait was brief, but what strikes you immediately is the personal touch: your bags are taken care of, you’re addressed by your first name \u2014 in short, it’s a five-star service. The experience is that of a grand hotel with a concierge assigned to you for the duration of the voyage. The line reinvents the ocean travel experience with ships that evoke upscale hotels and resorts far more than traditional cruise ships. From the dock, the tone is set: less noise, less crowd, a service already tailored to you. You don’t “board” the ship \u2014 you “arrive.” To give you a sense of it: on board, you’re handed a cocktail or a glass of champagne while you wait comfortably in the lobby bar for someone to come fetch you for check-in. No queue. No number. You’re already in good hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where the contrast is most striking. On board Explora II, 461 suites (all with ocean views) accommodate up to a maximum of nearly 930 passengers, with a crew of 640 \u2014 a ratio of approximately 1.25 passengers per crew member. Every shared space \u2014 the pool terraces, the restaurants, the buffets, the bars, the indoor promenades \u2014 has been designed so that you never feel cramped or rushed. No waterslides here.<\/p>\n\n\n MSC, conversely, fully embraces its mass-market calling. On its ships, you could be sharing your holiday with more than 8,000 people including crew members. The activities on offer are proportional: water parks, shows, covered indoor promenades beneath an LED sky. It’s impressive. It’s lively. But for some, exhausting. That said, there are also quieter spaces like the Sky Lounge, which also houses a cigar lounge.<\/p>\n\n\n You’ll feel the difference as soon as you board MSC. Barely on the ship, crew members will offer you packages to include certain restaurants options in your stay. The intention is good, but the approach can feel rushed \u2014 even a little heavy-handed \u2014 for someone who has just set down their bags and hasn’t yet found their cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n MSC doesn’t skimp on options. World-class ships offer up to around fifteen dining venues \u2014 even more on the newest vessels \u2014 covering world cuisines: American steakhouse, sushi bar, teppanyaki, Mexican street food, seafood, not to mention the main dining rooms and buffets. The quality is honest, sometimes surprising, but the context imposes its limitations: thousands of meals served simultaneously, service that sometimes lacks fluidity, and that recurring question that comes back at the table \u2014 do you have the premium drinks package? We’re not in the realm of refinement, but for what the cruise offers at this price, it’s a proposition difficult to match in terms of quantity and variety.<\/p>\n\n\n With Explora Journeys, passengers have access to nine culinary experiences whose menus are crafted to reflect the local flavours of the destinations visited. I still have vivid memories of a delicious Dover sole at the Med Yacht Club \u2014 the kind of culinary memory that lingers long after you’ve returned home. The Anthology restaurant offers a seven-course tasting menu, a remarkable experience available for a supplement that is absolutely worth it. Sakura offers a journey through pan-Asian cuisine, while Marble & Co. Grill reinterprets the European steakhouse with understated elegance. The line also collaborates with internationally renowned chefs \u2014 Chef Franck Garanger, Explora Journeys’ culinary director, continues to elevate the gastronomic experience at sea with a coherent and exacting vision.<\/p>\n\n\n But it may be at the buffet level that the difference between the two lines is most felt day to day. Explora Journeys’ Emporium Marketplace draws inspiration from Italian culinary markets and traditions. Bread is baked on board, pizza comes out of a wood-fired oven, and the choices are healthier, more varied, served with consistent attentiveness \u2014 whether it’s water or spirits (complimentary champagne, did you say?). On MSC, the buffet leans more American, oriented toward more generous options in sugar and fried fare. You’ll enjoy yourself there, but eating well every day requires a bit more effort and discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Coffee enthusiasts won’t be left wanting: Explora Journeys offers a proper barista service, as well as a third-wave coffee bar, Crema Caf\u00e9, where you take the time to choose your origin, your brewing method, your moment. On MSC, coffee too often comes down to an automatic machine whose results leave connoisseurs underwhelmed \u2014 a detail that, for some, starts and ends every day on the wrong foot. That said, third-wave coffee is possible on MSC too, but you’ll need to seek out the right barista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the gentleman who travels to eat, the answer is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Service on board MSC is competent and professional. On par with a well-run international hotel chain. You get what you ask for, but little beyond that. This isn’t a criticism \u2014 it’s simply the reality that applies when you’re running a hotel at sea of this scale.<\/p>\n\n\n At Explora Journeys, the ambition is different. Attentive, personalized service with available concierges makes the experience even more exclusive. The staff learns your preferences \u2014 your favourite spirit, the time you like to wake up, whether you prefer your cabin cool or warm \u2014 and they’ll even play music for you in the evenings. This isn’t reactive service. It’s anticipatory service. The distinction is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MSC offers an extensive range, from affordable interior cabins (with no sea view) up to the MSC Yacht Club \u2014 a ship within a ship, with exclusive access, a private pool, and a dedicated concierge. For this segment, the proposition is genuine and represents one of the best value-for-money offerings in the premium category, though it’s limited to a handful of spots and books up quickly. Standard cabins with a sea view are smaller than those on Explora Journeys, but given how little time you’ll actually spend in them, they’re more than adequate.<\/p>\n\n\n With Explora Journeys, however, the cabin isn’t an option \u2014 it’s the heart of the promise and they are called suites. The accommodations evoke a property more akin to a Four Seasons-calibre hotel than the cabins of a traditional cruise ship \u2014 and read nothing like cruise cabins at all. Every suite features a private terrace overlooking the ocean, refined bedding, generous bathrooms, and Dyson hair dryers. This isn’t a presentation detail: it’s the difference between spending your nights aboard a ship and living in a temporary residence at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MSC knows how to entertain. Multiple shows run every evening \u2014 reservations required, as they fill up quickly (seats are reserved for MSC Yacht Club guests) \u2014 along with Formula 1 simulators (the group is a partner of the BWT Alpine racing team<\/a>) and an immersive effects cinema. For families, couples, and solo travellers who thrive on movement and never want a dull moment, the offering is unbeatable at this price. The MSC Gym by Technogym and the Aurea Spa round out the picture, both must-visits \u2014 though the spa can get quite busy and noisy during peak hours.<\/p>\n\n\n At Explora Journeys, the approach is the inverse. A wellness area of over 700 square metres, pools fitted with luxurious terraces, art galleries, lectures delivered by guest speakers \u2014 the ambition is to nourish the mind as much as the body. The Journeys Lounge, with bar service and a capacity of over 200 guests, serves equally as a conference space, a stage for music and comedy performances, and a place of quiet contemplation depending on the hour.<\/p>\n\n\n These aren’t activities to kill time. They’re experiences to inhabit it. The spa is equally a must here, as is the gym, equipped with Technogym machines, a testament to the ship’s commitment to both physical and mental well-being. And don’t overlook the hair salon \u2014 to be at your best at every port of call \u2014 as well as complimentary washers and dryers, so you can return home with luggage as fresh as the memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On board MSC, the boutiques offer the essentials \u2014 fragrances, cosmetics, some watches brands, resort wear, duty-free spirits, souvenirs. It’s functional, accessible, and the duty-free prices remain attractive. Nothing surprising, but nothing disappointing either.<\/p>\n\n\n At Explora Journeys, the experience is of an entirely different order. A curated selection of prestigious watches and jewellery \u2014 Rolex, Cartier, Panerai, Piaget, Buccellati, among others \u2014 is presented in a setting worthy of the pieces on display. Fine wines and spirits are also readily at hand. But the boutique goes beyond retail: discovery evenings are organized on board \u2014 genuine cocktail hours with Cartier, Panerai, and other houses, drink in hand, where I had the chance to explore the history and collections of these two brands in a relaxed atmosphere. The kind of evening you simply can’t recreate in a city boutique. For the gentleman who uses a crossing to take the time to choose a watch without the pressure of a shop floor, this is a rare opportunity. Buying a Rolex at sea (only on Explora I and III for the moment), between two Caribbean port calls \u2014 there’s a certain poetry in the idea, and better still, no waiting years to actually own one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MSC excels on classic Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries, with port calls at major tourist hubs. The logistics are seamless, the shore excursions plentiful, returns on board punctual. You see a great deal in a short time. And Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, is unquestionably one of the cruise’s highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n And for Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois travellers, some welcome news: starting in November 2026, the MSC Opera will call in Martinique \u2014 a destination that holds a very special place in the hearts of people from here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Explora Journeys itineraries are crafted in a unique way. Mediterranean voyages run from seven to ten nights and can be combined to create journeys of up to 19 nights with very little port repetition. The line favours more intimate destinations \u2014 Gustavia in Saint-Barth\u00e9lemy, Bequia in the Grenadines, Little Bay in Montserrat \u2014 ports of call that speak more to curious travellers than to rushed tourists. One nuance worth keeping in mind: with a smaller passenger count, certain shore activities may not run due to insufficient sign-ups \u2014 the natural trade-off of an intimate cruise. Starting in 2028, Explora Journeys will also offer a call at Sandy Cay \u2014 a private island in the Bahamas, designed as an intimate retreat directly across from MSC’s Ocean Cay. Pristine aragonite sand, exclusive access, immersion in the natural rhythms of the ocean. A port of call that, even on paper, feels like Explora Journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cruising has long been perceived as a couples’ journey \u2014 the sunset on the deck, the candlelit dinner, the shared cabin. That image still holds. But it tells an incomplete story.<\/p>\n\n\n On board an MSC Cruises ship, the constant activity naturally plays in favour of couples looking to share experiences together \u2014 shows, themed restaurants, evening events, organized excursions. The agenda is full, time together is structured. For a first cruise as a couple, or for an orchestrated escape from the everyday, it’s a formula that works. The solo traveller, meanwhile, will easily find movement, connection, and a social energy carried by the sheer density of the ship. The atmosphere is festive, the opportunities for conversation plentiful. As these are livelier and more affordable cruises, solo travellers are more numerous and connections come more naturally \u2014 the sociability of the ship is inherently part of the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n At Explora Journeys, the register is different \u2014 and perhaps more subtle. That in itself is a form of elegance \u2014 though nothing is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Choose MSC Cruises for a lively couples’ cruise or a social adventure as a solo traveller. Explora Journeys for couples’ intimacy or the elegance of a solo journey well lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MSC suits the gentleman who travels with family or friends, who appreciates the buzz, the constant animation, and wishes to maximize the number of experiences on a controlled budget. He values efficiency, variety, and entertainment. The MSC Yacht Club will offer him a bubble of luxury within a grand ship \u2014 an elegant compromise between refined comfort and a lively atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n Explora Journeys speaks to the gentleman who conceives of travel as an art of slowness. The one who prefers a conversation to a show, a seven-course dinner to a world buffet, a discreet port of call to a crowded harbour. He isn’t trying to see everything \u2014 he’s trying to truly be somewhere. The cruise isn’t his means of transport.
