It\u2019s written by Gabrielle Boulianne-Tremblay and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois L\u00e9ger, directed by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Asselin, and stars Louis Morissette in the title role (he\u2019s also a producer alongside Louis-Philippe Drolet), Pascale Drevillon, Genevi\u00e8ve Schmidt, Cassandra Latreille, Rachel Graton, and Robin Aubert. This work, released in early July, floored me. Here\u2019s why I loved this film and why everyone should go see it. I\u2019m thinking of you in particular, gentlemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fran\u00e7ois\u00b7e, or a Mirror to Masculine Contradictions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nz1JFlxGka8?si=uhR2UBr2AHIob7l3\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To sum up the story: Fran\u00e7ois, a screenwriter on the decline, sees his life (and his house) falling apart, and decides, on a form, to check off \u201ctransgender\u201d to secure funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately (or unfortunately for Fran\u00e7ois), it works. He then has to transform himself and become Fran\u00e7oise, an author in transition. From that moment on, a shift in perception among his loved ones becomes apparent. His ex-wife and daughter behave differently toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fran\u00e7ois\u2019s biggest challenge, however, is that he doesn\u2019t know the codes of the series he\u2019s writing. To ensure authenticity in his screenplay, he forms an alliance with Sarah, a true trans writer, portrayed masterfully by Pascale Drevillon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he dives headfirst into the project, he doesn\u2019t realize his lies are trapping him either. Everything seems to be going well for Fran\u00e7ois: the money, the relationships. Everything is perfect, but he\u2019s walking a tightrope, and everything can\u2014and will\u2014tip to the wrong side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I say contradiction because, while everything looks fine on the outside for Fran\u00e7ois, inside, things are far from okay. And that says a lot about us men. As Fran\u00e7ois looks at himself from the outside as Fran\u00e7oise, he comes to understand all his flaws and how differently others perceive him. A sad reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Funny and Touching Film<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Francois.e-Pascale-Drevillon-and-Louis-Morissette.jpg\" alt=\"Pascale Drevillon (Sarah) and Louis Morissette (Fran\u00e7ois \/ Fran\u00e7oise)\" class=\"wp-image-67617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Francois.e-Pascale-Drevillon-and-Louis-Morissette.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gentologie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Francois.e-Pascale-Drevillon-and-Louis-Morissette-200x133.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pascale Drevillon (Sarah) and Louis Morissette (Fran\u00e7ois \/ Fran\u00e7oise)<br>Photo: Danny Taillon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film moves effortlessly between genuinely funny moments and more uncomfortable scenes, a contrast that\u2019s clearly intentional, whether it\u2019s with Daniel, the garage mechanic played by Robin Aubert, or the hockey dressing room, a true echo chamber of masculinity. It\u2019s hard not to laugh at this pitch-perfect recreation of a Pretty Woman scene: a real gem of art direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hockey dressing room scene I mentioned above is also worth discussing further, as acceptance of change sits at the heart of how the people Fran\u00e7ois has known for years suddenly shift their perception of him entirely once he becomes Fran\u00e7oise.<br>Another moment that strikes a nerve is the assault and the exchange with police officers, who don\u2019t seem to take Fran\u00e7oise\u2019s report seriously. It\u2019s easy to imagine this may be drawn from a real experience lived by the co-writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clinic scene strikes a nerve too, and is a reminder of just how difficult the medical path remains for trans people. The RAMQ ([The R\u00e9gie de l\u2019assurance maladie du\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec (RAMQ) administers public health and drug insurance plans and pays health professionals] and likely every health authority on the planet) would do well to better support this reality. There\u2019s a real sense of closeness in the scene, feelings beyond friendship developing between the two main characters, even leading to a kiss.<br>But beneath the humour and tenderness, the film never loses sight of where it started: the lie Fran\u00e7ois checked off on a form to secure funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This mechanism is at the core of the film: a funding system that pushes a screenwriter out of ideas to lie about his identity to save his career. The subject is unsettling, and rightly so\u2014a screenplay, no matter how good (unlike the first version Fran\u00e7ois submitted), should be able to stand out on its quality alone, regardless of the identity of the person who wrote it. The film raises an unavoidable question: does a project really need to check an identity box, or come from someone already known, to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than imposing quotas, a more promising path, in my view, would be mentorship: sponsorship programs where experienced voices in the field \u2014 in writing, screenwriting, acting \u2014 support up-and-coming talent from diverse backgrounds, without sidelining anyone else in the process. A way to broaden the creative community through openness and inclusion, rather than obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Reality of the Film Fran\u00e7ois\u00b7e and Men<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You only need to visit the social media accounts of actor and producer Louis Morissette to realize that a lot of us, I mean men here, aren\u2019t doing well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the moment the trailer dropped in April 2026, well before the film\u2019s release, controversy was already brewing. And since then, plenty of people, mostly men who haven\u2019t seen the film (!!!), have been lashing out violently and disturbingly, insulting the actor in the title role as well as the trans community as a whole. Morissette himself had to speak out publicly to condemn the tone of some comments, which went well beyond legitimate criticism of a work of fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s striking is how backwards it all is: the film, co-written with trans author Gabrielle Boulianne-Tremblay and led by the beautiful trans actress Pascale Drevillon, was actually well received by the trans community itself. So the source of the discomfort lies elsewhere. And that \u201celsewhere,\u201d gentlemen, is us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Be a Good Ally<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll admit that, before seeing the film, several of the codes shown on screen went over my head (I should admit I don\u2019t have any trans people in my immediate circle, and I rarely cross paths with any), and some still do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s perfectly natural to sometimes not know how to behave or what to do. After all, less than 2% of the population is trans, which means it\u2019s rarely part of most people\u2019s day-to-day lives, but it\u2019s very much present nonetheless. For some, that\u2019s confronting, and it\u2019s okay to admit that. You need to know how to put words into what you\u2019re experiencing. Difference often scares people, but there\u2019s a way to express that which doesn\u2019t hurt anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One way to grow, to understand, is simply to ask questions when the moment and the relationship allow for it. And it\u2019s completely normal to make mistakes, not to know all the vocabulary: it might not be your everyday reality, but that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t learn to understand it better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting someone\u2019s name or pronoun wrong happens, even with the best intentions. The difference between an ally and someone who hurts without meaning to often comes down to how they recover: simply, without turning it into a drama that shifts attention back onto themselves rather than the person in front of them. You correct yourself, you carry on, and you remember for next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being an ally also doesn\u2019t mean waiting to have all the answers before acting.
