It was during its expeditions in the 1950s with the British North Greenland Expedition, in North Greenland, that TUDOR put its watches to the ultimate test. We\u2019re talking about two long years, braving bitter cold on the wrists of fearless adventurers, in conditions where the sun could disappear for months on end, blurring any conventional notion of day and night. It wasn\u2019t the first time the Swiss watchmaker\u2019s timepieces had endured such an extreme experience, but this new trial only confirmed, once again, their reliability in the eyes of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seventy years later, as TUDOR marks its centennial, the brand once again draws on this polar heritage with the return of the Northflag, more than a decade after the original 2015 model. This new iteration doesn’t simply revive the aesthetic codes of its predecessors: it adds a GMT function designed precisely for these extreme latitudes, where the distinction between day and night loses its meaning, a direct nod to the conditions faced by the pioneers of Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This rugged mechanical watch is, for the first time, equipped with a 24-hour hand, a particularly relevant function in northern regions plunged into darkness or bathed in light for months at a time, during the polar night or the midnight sun, or when the sun sets earlier and rises later, as several regions of the world are about to experience in the coming weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n

Going back to the name: let\u2019s be honest, it\u2019s common practice to plant a flag to claim a first, as we\u2019ve seen with NASA\u2019s expeditions or those to Everest, for example. As for TUDOR, the aptly named Northflag takes its name from the word \u201cNorth,\u201d in reference to the brand\u2019s founding moment: its participation in the British North Greenland Expedition. The Northflag was the first TUDOR watch to be equipped with a mechanical movement developed and manufactured in-house: the high-performance calibre\u00a0MT5621, back in 2015. The company has come a long way since then, it must be said.<\/p>\n\n\n

This new evolution draws on the main lines and distinctive design elements of the 1973 TUDOR Ranger\u00a0II. Among them is the integrated bracelet, which appears to naturally extend the case it\u2019s attached to.<\/p>\n\n\n

The model also features a signature black dial punctuated by large Arabic numerals in luminous monobloc ceramic, ringed by a flange tilted at 45 degrees and graduated on a 24-hour scale. Finally, the 24-hour hand and the hour hand, both arrow-shaped, along with the angular seconds hand and the baton-shaped minute hand, are all historical nods to the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned above, this watch stands out for the design of its integrated bracelet. It\u2019s an exclusive two-link integrated bracelet, made of 316 L steel, mainly satin-finished, with polished chamfered links and a TUDOR \u201cT-fit\u201d quick-adjustment clasp. Easy to use, requiring no tools, and offering five positions, this practical mechanism lets you make fine, instant adjustments across an 8 mm total bracelet-length range. The clasp also features a ceramic ball-bearing system that ensures a reliable closure while delivering a satisfying, precise feel. In short, just the thing to win over those headed on an expedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This visual connection between the bracelet and case is easy to spot thanks to aesthetic details shared by both. For example: a satin finish oriented according to the decorated sections. As for the top of the lugs and bezel, they\u2019re accented with polished chamfers that echo the bracelet. The slightly conical crown has a matte finish, the result of a combination of satin-brushing and bead-blasting. Finally, true to the spirit of the original Northflag, which in 2015 embodied a watch of firsts for TUDOR, notably with its first in-house Manufacture calibre and its first open caseback, the caseback here is open as well, fitted with a slightly domed sapphire crystal revealing the Manufacture Calibre MT5652-U, certified Master Chronometer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Manufacture Calibre MT5652-U, which powers the Northflag, perfectly illustrates TUDOR\u2019s characteristic approach to technical development, one built on an adaptable architecture capable of integrating new functions without relying on additional modules. A minor detail to some, an essential feature to horology purists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Offering hour, minute, and second functions, along with date and GMT, it carries the appearance typical of TUDOR Manufacture calibres, with signature sunburst laser finishing, and bears the \u201cMaster Chronometer\u201d designation on its bridges, highlighting its exceptional performance. Its openworked rotor is made of monobloc tungsten and features radial laser-engraved decoration combined with sandblasted details. Its bridges and mainplate display an alternation of sandblasted and polished surfaces along with laser-applied decoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The construction is engineered to ensure both robustness and precision, thanks to a variable-inertia balance wheel held by a solid double-anchored bridge. The movement is chronometer-certified by the Contr\u00f4le Officiel Suisse des Chronom\u00e8tres (COSC), with performance that exceeds this independent institution\u2019s standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact, while COSC allows for an average daily rate variation of \u20134 to +6 seconds on the movement alone, and TUDOR applies a tolerance of \u20132 to +4 seconds on the fully assembled watch\u2019s rate, METAS requires that a Master Chronometer-certified watch operate within a tolerance range of 5 seconds (0\/+5). The Manufacture Calibre MT5652-U isn\u2019t just certified to be more precise, it\u2019s also resistant to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. This precision can prove vital for those heading out on an expedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another notable feature: the power reserve of the Manufacture Calibre MT5652-U is described as \u201cweekend-proof,\u201d with a METAS-approved running time of 65 hours on a full wind, meaning you can set your watch down Friday evening and pick it back up Monday morning without needing to rewind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is, without question, a serious piece. While this watch could certainly pair with a tuxedo at a formal event, it was never designed to sit idly on the wrist of a spectator: it\u2019s built for those who work hard and aren\u2019t afraid to put it to the test. Its polar heritage, rooted in the British expeditions to Greenland in the 1950s, is still felt today in its rugged build and in its GMT reading, designed for extreme latitudes where day and night sometimes lose their usual bearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
