I don’t know about you, but when the cold weather sets in, I have only one desire: to take refuge in the warm sun and be pampered. Having experienced a cruise with Explora Journeys aboard the EXPLORA II<\/a>, I could hardly wait for the press visit of the brand-new EXPLORA III during its stop at the Port of Qu\u00e9bec, its first call in North America, on September 28. The most significant change is visible as soon as you step aboard. (You are still welcomed with champagne on arrival, but this time it is G.H. Martell instead of the Mercier that was served on the EXPLORA II during my journey on board.)<\/p>\n\n\n

Whether you come aboard on Deck 4 or Deck 5 (the options vary depending on the port where the EXPLORA III docks), you will immediately notice a new LOBBY (it is the entrance hall, but also the name of the space). On Deck 4, you enter a calmer and slightly less flamboyant setting. The impressive design, with a marble bar rising to the ceiling, has given way to a more understated arrival where black and white dominate.<\/p>\n\n\n

The piano has been moved to Deck 4, in the LOBBY, a stone’s throw from the staircase, whereas it was originally located on a higher deck on the EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II. The LOBBY is also much larger and offers more room for cruisers who come to enjoy the sumptuous cocktails.<\/p>\n\n\n

I have the impression that the space is a little more compartmentalized, since the bar does not extend across the full width, making room for a fireplace lounge and a library area, but as I only passed through very quickly, I can’t say so with complete certainty. It should be said that the ship is nearly 20 metres longer than its predecessors, for a total length of 268 m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also within the LOBBY, the EXPLORA III has five boutiques, which are closed when the ship is docked. Cartier, already present on the EXPLORA II, is on board, as is Chopard, which appears for the first time in the fleet. Rolex returns after the EXPLORA I; it is no doubt the best opportunity to acquire a watch without a wait, although the selection is probably more limited, but I can’t confirm that. The Journey boutique offers forgotten essentials, a variety of gifts that reflect the ship, as well as fragrances, skincare, spirits and exceptional wines. Finally, Ocean Atelier, an Explora Journeys brand, showcases creations inspired by the famous Mandala that represents the ship.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In place of the piano on Deck 5 that I mentioned above (set back a little, though), you will find The Cellar, a venue comparable to an exceptional wine bar where you can taste wines on board, whether on your own among other travellers or in a private group. The finest champagnes and rare spirits are offered in this magnificent space designed as a wine cellar. <\/p>\n\n\n

As for The Chef’s Table by Explora Journeys, which you will also find on the upcoming EXPLORA IV, it is, according to Explora Journeys’ description, a one-of-a-kind, entirely personalized culinary experience. Designed for guests who seek intimacy, personalization and the pleasure of the made-to-measure, it invites you to work closely with the chefs. Together, you will design a fully customized menu, turning your preferences, stories and inspirations into a unique culinary journey to share with those you love. It is the perfect experience for a special occasion or a dinner among friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note that these two new experiences, like Chef’s Kitchen, already available on the previous ships, come at an additional cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Restaurants: A Replica With a Few Novelties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Most of the restaurants found on the EXPLORA II are the same. You will find Fil Rouge (excellent French cuisine in a dimly lit atmosphere that I was able to try on the EXPLORA II), Sakura (which I did not try during my trip on the EXPLORA II, but which offers, among others, champagnes such as KRUG<\/a> and Tel<\/a>m<\/a>ont<\/a>), Marble & Co. (a high-quality, European-inspired steakhouse where I was unable to enjoy dessert during my visit on the fleet’s second ship), Anthology (an exceptional culinary experience I tried on the EXPLORA II), the Med Yacht Club (where I enjoyed my first Dover sole aboard the Explora\u00a0II, an experience I will remember for life) and the newcomer, Shore Club on 11 at The Conservatory is located, as its name indicates, in The Conservatory, is described as an experience inspired by the seaside resorts of the European coasts, which I did not have the chance to try.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Emporium Marketplace, presented as a restaurant but which is in reality what we call the “buffet,” is found here as across the entire Explora Journeys fleet. The food is excellent, prepared with fresh ingredients. Everything is cooked on board, including the pizza dough, thanks to an oven of Italian origin, which reflects the Italian roots of the Aponte-Vago family, owners of Explora Journeys. It was one of the highlights of my trip, and I went back several times, as every dish is a delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note that all the dining experiences presented in this section, with the exception of Anthology, are included in the cost of the voyage. Of course, you will have to pay for the very high-end alcohol (the base selection is already excellent). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t know about you, but for me, the drinks often flow freely (especially when they’re free), and on the EXPLORA III, there is no shortage of opportunities. In addition to The Cellar, you will find no fewer than 12 lounges where you can quench your thirst (including Crema, the coffee bar). Among them, I particularly recommend the Malt Whisky Bar to gentlemen, set in a speakeasy atmosphere with the Cigar Lounge right next door, where I smoked my first cigar ever (during my trip on the EXPLORA II). Note that there are no Cuban cigars during the Caribbean season, since the ship calls at ports in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n

And for those who want an adults-only space, Helios Pool & Bar is the only area reserved for guests of legal age. The Sky Bar on 14 (on Deck 14) is not to be missed, especially for its incredible view. Worth noting, cocktails and wines served in the outdoor bars come in plastic glasses (for safety reasons). Personally, it’s not my preference, but I wanted to mention it nonetheless.<\/p>\n\n\n

Moreover, in a spirit of openness, Club Soda offers travellers who avoid alcohol or who simply want a break vibrant experiences, renewing the art of socializing with a refreshing sophistication. <\/p>\n\n\n

Eating well is all very nice, but if you want to go home and still fit into your clothes, you need to move. I must say there is no shortage of options on the EXPLORA III. I’m thinking of the indoor fitness centre and studio, the outdoor equipment (in partnership with Technogym), the 262-metre running track, and the sports court (where you can play basketball, tennis, padel and several other sports), where everyone will find something to their liking. <\/p>\n\n\n

To rest properly, you can count on the spa. The baths are open to everyone at no charge, but treatments come at an additional cost. It is relaxing, and there is even a secret room opening onto the outdoors where you can cool off. And if you need a little sprucing up, several services are offered (hair rituals, barber services, manicures and hand care, pedicures and foot care, and in-suite beauty services). You will be at your best when you return home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Travelling solo? Experiences for solo travellers (optional, and tied to the presence of other people travelling alone) are offered on board. Know that for the most part, it is couples who sail on Explora Journeys ships, but if you are on your own, it will be an incredible experience. Speaking of meeting people, Club Prism proudly celebrates diversity, bringing together LGBTQIA+ travellers and allies at inclusive and lively events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Suites: Familiar Design and Exclusive Touches<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The rooms, which are called “Suites” across the entire Explora Journeys fleet, all have a balcony and an ocean view. I visited a few of them, but not all, since the ship was occupied by many passengers. Note that there are no interior cabins anywhere in the Explora Journeys fleet, unlike many other ships, such as the MSC Meraviglia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ocean Suites, divided into two categories, the Ocean Terrace Suite and the Ocean Grand Terrace Suite, are the entry-level suites, all measuring 28 square metres. Most have king beds, and a few have two double beds. Some suites have a sofa bed to accommodate older children. As on the other ships in the fleet, you will find a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, the lovely Mandala Blue products (provided in a bathroom with heated floors), Frette bathrobes (Frette also supplies the bedding) and a walk-in closet. All Suites on the EXPLORA III receive a bottle of champagne, as well as a choice of a bottle of wine or spirits, upon the travellers’ arrival. You will also find books, binoculars, a small beverage fridge, a coffee machine, a teapot and, of course, a television. For ironing, you must go to the laundry room for safety reasons. The laundry room also has a washer and dryer that you can use free of charge, which is very handy on long cruises or for people travelling with only a carry-on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Penthouses, the second class of Suites, are divided into four categories (Penthouse, Deluxe Penthouse, Premier Penthouse and Grand Penthouse), where the biggest difference is a dining table for four. Some Penthouse classes have larger terraces and enclosed bedrooms. This class of Suites is larger, starting at 43 square metres.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocean Residences<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Next comes the Ocean Residences category (starting at 67 square metres), which I did not visit on the EXPLORA III, but you can see them in the article on the EXPLORA II. No, these are not properties you can buy, but rather the name given to the top-tier suites. They are divided as follows: Cove Residences, Cove Residences with Whirlpool, Retreat Residences, Serenity Residences and Cocoon Residences, the Owner’s Residence and, new this time, the Owner’s Residence by Patricia Urquiola. In the Residences, the more classic d\u00e9cor changes completely and is truly more luxurious, with wood mouldings, large terraces, workout areas with a Technogym set, and some even have a private jacuzzi. In some, the entertaining spaces are larger, as are the bathrooms, which feature a double vanity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Owner’s Residence, furniture by Knoll and Molteni & C, along with lighting designed by Astep, creates a refined setting. It has two bedrooms, with a welcoming dining room for you and seven guests. A separate bedroom offers a view of the sea, along with a well-appointed workspace, a Calacatta marble bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower, a private sauna and a personal dressing room. A sign of your standing aboard the EXPLORA III, a bottle of Dom P\u00e9rignon awaits you on arrival, complemented by a well-stocked bar at your disposal.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most exclusive suite on board, the Owner’s Residence styled by Patricia Urquiola embodies the ultimate expression of life at sea: an immersive and emotional journey devoted to the senses, according to the brand’s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explora Journeys describes this exceptional “Residence” as follows: every surface, every detail reflects Patricia Urquiola’s singular approach. Through textures, proportions and light, beauty is quietly revealed. A vast terrace stretches from port to starboard. From the immense jacuzzi, the outdoor dining area or the comfortable lounge chairs, you can enjoy an endless panorama of the ocean. Inside, elegance sculpts the atmosphere: oak flooring, refined marbles and ornamental woodwork lend the whole a sense of fluidity, enhanced by furniture from Cassina, Kettal and Moroso. A round dining room for eight guests blends seamlessly into the living space, which features a bar counter dedicated to lively evenings. The peaceful sanctuary of the single bedroom offers a sweeping panorama of the ocean, and the travertine bathroom is equipped with a bathtub, a separate shower, a sauna and a spacious wardrobe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True to its slogan, “Ocean State of Mind,” you will not find big, extravagant dance parties on the Explora fleet. Instead, discover a variety of entertainment, from piano recitals in intimate rooms thanks to their collaboration with Steinway & Sons, to immersive cinema in The Conservatory, along with comedy acts, contemporary circus artists, variety shows, concerts with renowned performers, and immersive productions. <\/p>\n\n\n

Cruises From East to West Across Canada and, Soon, River Cruises<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, Explora Journeys stopped in Canada as part of this cruise, which took the EXPLORA III from Hamburg to Qu\u00e9bec City. It will be back in Qu\u00e9bec City on October\u00a015, then head to Miami via New York for the 2026-2027 winter season. It will return to Canada in May 2027 for a summer of voyages to Alaska from Vancouver, before beginning its journey to Asia in the fall of\u00a02027. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Also, know that the EXPLORA III is the first ship in their fleet to run on LNG (liquefied natural gas). It is part of Explora Journeys’ effort to reduce the carbon footprint of its maritime operations. Furthermore, the group recently announced that it is entering the river cruise market (somewhat in the style of CroisiEurope, which Jean-Michel Dufaux tested for us<\/a>) over the coming years, having signed a partnership with the Dutch shipyard Den\u00a0Breejen Shipyard for the construction of its first luxury river vessels. More details to come in 2027. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
