Though not instinctively associated with pure prestige, Citizen has nonetheless been a pillar of watchmaking in Canada for decades. You\u2019ve surely noticed that the brands of Citizen Watch Canada are very different from one another, and yet each is a source of pride for the group. Bulova, for its part, blends American heritage (the brand was once manufactured in the United States), technical innovation, music and culture. If you follow watch news even a little, you\u2019ve almost certainly heard of Eco-Drive technology. If not, in a few words, it\u2019s Citizen\u2019s exclusive, proprietary light-powered technology. It converts virtually any source of light, natural or artificial, into energy and stores that energy in a rechargeable cell, which eliminates the need for regular battery replacements. Sunlight, fluorescent lighting, incandescent light and LED light can all help keep an Eco-Drive watch running. Pretty handy, isn\u2019t it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked the team why they created this technology more than 50\u00a0years ago. You may already know this, but in the early 1970s, the world was facing an energy crisis, which inspired Citizen\u2019s engineers to explore sunlight as a clean, renewable source of energy. That work led to the launch, in 1976, of the world\u2019s first light-powered analogue quartz watch (that quartz revolution, incidentally, nearly killed off mechanical watches, as I explain in this article<\/a>). The Japanese group\u2019s engineers set out to create a more convenient and sustainable alternative to conventional battery-powered watches by eliminating the need to replace batteries regularly. Since its launch, Citizen estimates that Eco-Drive technology has helped keep more than 100\u00a0million batteries out of landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
