There is, in the art of travel, a form of quiet luxury that cannot be measured in numbers. It is a more subtle luxury — one discovered in the attention to detail, in the warmth of a welcome, and sometimes in a simple knowing glance exchanged between you and your dog. For the modern gentleman, travel only makes sense when his loyal four-legged companion can share every moment of it. Not forgetting my partner, of course! So, off we went to Le Bonne Entente in Québec City for this first stop.

It was in this spirit that we headed to Québec City for a short stay at this great classic of Quebec hospitality (which, it should be noted, has not gone by the name “Château Bonne Entente” for several years now), where elegance and serenity go hand in hand. And of course, Simone — our faithful and now rather celebrated canine companion — was not about to miss the adventure.

A Welcome Worth the Trip

From the moment we arrived, a smiling staff member rushed over to assist us, while another cheerfully knelt down to give Simone a few well-deserved strokes. The tone was set immediately: here, luxury does not rhyme with coldness. We were welcomed like regulars, with a warmth that felt simple yet entirely genuine. The soothing atmosphere, the elegantly contemporary architecture, and the vast reflecting pool stretching out in front of the hotel all set an ideal scene — even if the property sits right in the heart of the capital.

The rooms, spacious and comfortable, breathe calm. Nothing is left to chance: sumptuous bedding, soft lighting — it is all there. Simone, too, received her own little privileges, delivered right to the room: a plush dog bed, a fresh bowl of water, and a selection of carefully chosen treats, including a collar tag in the hotel’s colours. A thoughtful touch we genuinely appreciated, and one that speaks to a real sensitivity toward canine guests.

A Charm That Is Slightly Imperfect

While comfort is beyond reproach, the refinement must contend with a few hiccups. In our room category, the bathroom left something to be desired on the practical side: a design that is certainly aesthetic, but whose bathtub and shower proved surprisingly difficult to access. One needs a solid sense of balance and fairly long legs to avoid slipping over the edge. Nothing dramatic, of course — but in an establishment that cultivates luxury down to its smallest details, the ergonomics could stand to be a little more considered.

Another small inconvenience: one evening, feeling like a simple bite to eat in our room, we called the bar — only to discover that the full menu was unavailable. To make matters worse, the front desk staff seemed just as surprised by the news, politely passing the question along without being able to point us toward a clear solution. No drama, in the end — a call to a well-known delivery service eventually sorted things out — but this kind of dissonance is surprising in a property known for the rigour of its service.

As luck would have it, we were told we had arrived during a transition period, and that only the more gastronomic dishes were available. But when you are craving a simple burger — however refined — no French specialty can quite fill that particular void.

Le Bonne Entente in Québec City: A Splendid Estate

These small imperfections take nothing away from the undeniable charm of Le Bonne Entente. Its vast, verdant grounds, its paths lined with mature trees, and its overall atmosphere make it a true urban sanctuary. In the morning, you wake to the discreet sound of birdsong; in the afternoon, you stroll with Simone along the waterside paths, struck by how surprisingly far removed from the city you feel — despite being only a few metres from it.

A special mention goes to the service team — courteous and genuinely warm — who always seem ready to go one step (or two) further to ensure a pleasant stay. This attentiveness makes all the difference: it transforms a simple accommodation into something that feels almost personal.

One shadow does remain on the picture for dog-travelling guests: beyond the rooms and the immediate outdoor spaces, very few areas are truly accessible to Simone. Keeping her by our side during an indoor dinner — or even at the bar — was simply not possible. It is a detail that any dog lover will understand; one always wishes to share every moment with one’s companion, especially in an environment where comfort permeates everything. And please, do not say it cannot be done — other establishments in Québec manage it without a second thought.

Since our four-legged companion could not follow us everywhere within the hotel, we decided to extend the pleasure elsewhere — somewhere more relaxed and perfectly in keeping with our desire for warm, unpretentious service. We headed to La Barberie, the iconic microbrewery in the Saint-Roch neighbourhood, where dogs are not merely tolerated but joyfully welcomed.

Over lunch, we rediscovered that simple, sincere approach that complements a high-end stay so perfectly. As we savoured an amber ale and one of the house beer-braised sausages, Simone lay at our feet, happily accepting the attentions of charmed passersby. It was the perfect image of the modern, authentic couple: a gentleman, his partner, their dog, and a genuinely good moment — without a hint of pretension.
