The origin of The Scotchman Chronicle: Unexpected encounter with a gentleman

This week, bedridden by illness, it was unthinkable to offer you another tasting analysis. Between antibiotics and the lack of taste sensations, it was better to postpone the analysis! But this setback gave me the opportunity to return to the origins of The Scotchman Chronicle: why did I embark on this adventure?

The origin of The Scotchman Chronicle: the beginning of a shared passion

It all began at a tasting organized by Glenfiddich’s former brand ambassador (my first column was about their 26-year-old Grande Couronne), the very kind Beth Havers at Bar Bootlegger, not to mention her, several years ago. A pleasant evening of passionate discussion and intoxicating aromas—in short, a classic tasting.

Just then, a discreet tap on my shoulder attracts my attention. I turn around and face an elegantly dressed man with an engaging smile. With typical British politeness, he asks me to repeat a comment I’d just made aloud about the Scotch we were tasting (the name of which now escapes me). I reiterate my analysis, which he greets with a thoughtful look before engaging in conversation. One thing leading to another, we discuss not only the evening, but also the fascinating world of spirits.

Although specifics from that night are now hazy, there is one indisputable fact: this man has remained in my life. He gave me the opportunity to share my passion through words, giving me carte blanche to express myself. So here, in a nutshell, is the origin of The Scotchman Chronicle.

A space to explore the world of Scotch

This gentleman, as you may have guessed, is none other than Normand Boulanger, creator of Gentologie. He’s the one who convinced me (without too much effort, I admit) to write this column.

In the weeks to come, I’ll have the privilege of taking you on a voyage of discovery through a variety of whiskies, as well as exploring the world of Scotch in all its richness. Expect articles on topics as varied as infinite bottles, the winners of international tasting competitions and new trends shaking up the industry.

The aim? Awaken your curiosity, encourage you to discover new distilleries and deepen your knowledge of this spirit often referred to as “the king of spirits.”
