Presidents Cup 2024: The perfect event for gentlemen

If you’re a fan of golf, you likely already know what I’m going to talk about. For the uninitiated, the Presidents Cup is a major biennial golf showdown pitting American golfers against the top international players, barring Europe, which contends in its own right at the Ryder Cup. To that end, the championship will be held at the Royal Montréal Golf Club from September 24 to 29, 2024, so gentlemen, don’t forget to take your tickets.

This will mark the second time in the tournament’s history—the first being in 2007— that the oldest golf club in North America will host this prestigious and thrilling event. To give you a fairway wood’s reach back in time, this international tournament was teed off in 1994 at the picturesque Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, nestled in the heart of Prince William County, Virginia, USA. Fast forward to the 2024 meeting, and it’s the 30th anniversary of this global golfing gathering, where the world’s finest golfers have swung their clubs, all vying for the honour of lifting that esteemed trophy for their team and their country.

Mike Weir, first Canadian captain of the international team

Mike Weir, a greta gentleman, swinging into the role as the first Canadian captain of the international squad, candidly shared his sentiments about the pressures and pleasures of playing at such a major tournament on home soil. “Actually, I don’t see it that way, it’s more excitement than pressure. There’s more excitement and enjoyment in getting back on this stage. This opportunity doesn’t come around often. Think of Ernie (Els) leading in Australia, or Gary (Player) in South Africa—there’s a unique thrill that comes with playing on your home course. For me, in Canada, it’s pure enjoyment. Being captain, for sure, there’s a bit more pressure. It’s a different kind of game from when I was in the players’ shoes [Editor’s note: Captains do not play], and I just want the players who come here to have fun. It’s such a special week, with memories that last a lifetime, and I hope they get some laughs in and enjoy their time on the course. While the ultimate prize is a team victory, it’s also about setting the stage for the players’ individual games. Post-Cup play on the PGA Tour often sees an uptick in performance from all competitors, and I’m eager to witness the upswing in their careers following this event,” he reflected.

Genesis, an esteemed partner of Gentologie, has taken the driver’s seat as the Official Automotive Sponsor of the Presidents Cup through 2026. It was with their generosity that we had the chance to fly out to the Genesis Scottish Open last July.

In fact, I asked Mr. Ryan Erdelyi, director of marketing at Genesis Motors Canada, to illustrate the extent of the relationship between golf and Genesis. “Golf has been a cornerstone of the Genesis brand story since its inception. This includes, among other things, sponsoring and participating in events such as the Genesis Scottish Open, the Genesis Invitational, the Genesis Championship, and the Presidents Cup. Golf is a global game that mirrors our customer base and reflects our philosophy of ‘athletic elegance’ to a tee. The sport provides the ideal platform for us to showcase our distinct approach to Korean hospitality, treating each guest—be they a player, caddy, or spectator—to an experience that is exceptional,” he detailed.

Mr. Ryan Hart, the driving force as the general manager of this grand sporting spectacle, couldn’t help but heap praise on Genesis. “We are extremely proud to partner with Genesis as our Official Automotive Sponsor of the Presidents Cup. The partnership continues to grow and we are very excited to work directly with Genesis Canada leading up to the event at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2024. Genesis is deeply committed to the sport of golf and to elevating the event’s status on the global stage,” says the head of the competition.

“We are very excited to support this major tournament in Canada. It’s a beautiful and historic course. We are eager to show why Genesis has acquired such a reputation for luxury hospitality and customer experience,” notes Mr. Eric Marshall, director of Genesis Motors Canada.
