Why go to there ?

To relax, you are close, but not too close, to Edinburgh’s major attractions. For its food courts and urban garden. For its huge lobby and its enormous library. And for the comfort of the room, with a really cozy bed.

The ambiance

A hotel that looks very classic from the outside, but with a very creative feeling inside, festive, combining woodwork and colourful throws. Perfect for working. It is possible to have lunch and coffee in several parts of the hotel, which is very practical.

The journey

Built in 1848, the Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel, formerly The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square—and before that The Roxburghe Hotel—combines elegance and luxury. It is the ideal place for holidaymakers and business travellers alike. It skilfully combines tradition with modern facilities. A modern extension has been built to complement the Georgian architecture of the terraced building. The complex consists of seven Georgian townhouses, which are linked together to establish a magnificent hotel.

The rooms

The rooms were magnificent and quite large! The one I stayed in had a bathroom with a very large bath and shower.

I mentioned the bed above, it is heaven, I think it is the most comfortable bed I have ever had in a hotel. It was easy to fall asleep, especially with the time difference, even though the flight on Air Canada was perfect.

Fine Dining

Breakfast at BABAPhoto: Normand Boulanger | Gentologie

The Middle Eastern-inspired BABA restaurant is delightful and vibrant with its bright colours, including turquoise. Feast on generous, well-crafted, gourmet dishes where meze takes pride of place here and a charcoal grill adds to the charm, offering lamb, beef and Scottish seafood (the Scottish oysters are huge!!). It is festive and perfect for sharing with friends and the cocktails are excellent. It is not a 5-star, but everything is good, both for dinner and breakfast.

The Aizle is the hotel’s more upmarket restaurant, I have not had the chance to try it, but it sounds like a fascinating experience, it is located in the garden and offers a tasting menu.

The Garden bar is simply stunning. An urban oasis that brings freshness to a darker part of the hotel. The glass roof provides natural light, making it the perfect place to work and enjoy a cocktail or coffee.

Spa

The Spa, with its pool in a very calm, dark atmosphere, will do you a world of good after a flight. The fitness centre offers everything you need to get back into shape during your trip.

Truly a stone’s throw from Johnnie Walker Princes Street, one of the city’s major attractions. Not to mention emporiums we Canadians don’t have like Barbour, Loake and the like, not to mention stores with incredible Scotch selections like The Loch Fyne.

The service is impeccable, the concierges are there to solve your problems, they are kind, courteous and exceed your expectations without you even asking.

A hotel within a hotel: number 33 Charlotte Square. A private entrance sets the scene; from here, everything can be customized, whether it is a press trip or a private wedding. Accommodating up to 20 people in 12 rooms, No. 33 at Charlotte Square also has two event spaces: The Dining Room and The Drawing Room (bookable without accommodation), which feel like a home from home and are connected by an elegant door. Grand and comfortable, they provide the ideal setting for private dining, creative brainstorming and lively conversation.

You can rent bicycles to get around the city.

As you are in Edinburgh, you will probably be woken by the cries of the gulls, which are very numerous and noisy.

Looking for a place to experience Scottish culture? Rose Street, just behind the hotel, offers a complete immersion experience. But beware, the bars close early in Edinburgh.
