Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, Autograph Collection
The Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, is a luxury mountain resort surrounded by nature. So close to nature that you can see free-roaming reindeer on the surrounding grounds in the heart of wild Alberta, just an hour from Calgary. The hotel is magnificent, magical, it is huge! The number of things to do in the surrounding area is just incredible. Think skiing, mountain hiking, skating, hockey, not forgetting the magnificent and enormous Spa on site to relax in. I was there for a short stay with the MyFitnessPal team.

Why stay at Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge?
For an escape into nature not too far from the city (less than an hour from Calgary). For its incredible atmosphere, especially during the festive season. If you have children, they will be over the moon—there are Christmas trees everywhere, I was there at the end of November, and the hotel is transformed even more in December with the addition of trains and the look of Santa’s house.
The ambiance
It is like being in a modern yet rustic cabin, a superb combination. There is everything you need to relax, even if you are there for a meeting. The Rockies are visible from almost everywhere, and the place is very quiet. It can get quite cold in the region, be warned. The days really are shorter in winter.
The journey
The resort was built in 1986 as the Delta Lodge at Kananaskis (a brand since acquired by Marriott) for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, with the alpine events taking place at the nearby Nakiska ski resort. In 2015, the hotel was renovated as part of a $26 million investment project, and it all still looks brand new!
The rooms
The rooms are spacious, with beautiful bathrooms. I was fortunate enough to have a room with a Nespresso coffee machine, which is very practical in the morning. There is a desk and a big TV. The bed is really comfortable and you can see the mountains from several of the rooms. You will appreciate the opacity of the curtains when the nights get shorter in summer in this part of Alberta.
Fine Dining
The hotel has several restaurants. Let us start with Forte, an Italian-themed restaurant designed for families with a menu to please everyone, it also offers buffet lunches. The view of Mount Kidd in the afternoon sunshine is superb. The Blacktail bar, which is beautiful and right next to the foyer, has a great selection of local whiskies. The Cedar Room is the hotel’s most upmarket restaurant. It is an impressive Canadian steakhouse in the purest tradition, and above all delicious (it is even possible to have a private room). The decor is magnificent and the staff are welcoming. It is a real pleasure to share a meal as a group, with several dishes where everyone can help themselves. You will also find Woody’s Pub & Bistro, outside and open only in summer.
The Market Café is the place to go for souvenirs and take-out food. A wide range of coffees, sandwiches and pastries are available. And do not forget room service, so you can enjoy your meal in complete privacy. And let us not forget the Two Trees Bistro in the Nordic Spa, which is all in keeping with the spa’s health theme by offering sharing platters made with local food, small plates, wines, craft beers, herbal teas and espresso drinks, always perfect for warming up.
Fitness Centre
I did not have time to visit the fitness centre, but it looks simply stunning. It is open every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., so there is plenty of time to keep active during your stay at Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.
In addition to the fitness room, a swimming pool and jacuzzis will appeal to all health and well-being enthusiasts.
Inside the hotel:
- Exercise studio
- Free weights and weight machines
- Treadmills, recumbent bikes and elliptical trainers
- Stability and medicine balls, mats, etc.
Spa
The magnificent Kananaskis Nordic Spa boasts 50,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor space, a relaxation pavilion, four outdoor pools, five steam and sauna cabins, an exfoliation room, heated hammocks, fireplace lounges, a meditation labyrinth, heated loungers with personal music stations, a dream lounge, a yoga studio, eight treatment rooms, massage therapists and the Two Trees Bistro restaurant mentioned in the Table Art section. Please note that unless you are a member of the media and have reserved hours, cellphones are not allowed on the premises.
The surroundings
It’s a mountain paradise for hiking enthusiasts. What’s more, Kananaskis Golf Course is less than 10 minutes away by car. The course was completely renovated and reopened in 2018 following the 2013 floods. The Nakiska Ski Area is less than 5 kilometres from Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, and you’re less than an hour from Banff and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Lake Louise. Perfect for a wonderful stay in Alberta.
The service
The service is simply impeccable, and the staff are really nice. Both at the counter and in the restaurant. They follow up by text message to make sure everything is OK. In short, an A+ for service.
Anything to add
Do not miss the trail to Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, the sunsets and sunrises are simply astounding (as you can see in the pictures). The best views are a 5–10 minutes’ walk from the main lodge. The fireplace is simply the perfect place to relax, housed in the centre of the lobby, you will certainly spend a lot of time there. There is also a huge water park built right into the centre. Ideal for families.
You really shouldn’t miss the S’MORES OLD FASHIONED! It’s made with Auchentoshan Three Wood Scotch, Basil Hayden Toast Bourbon, chocolate bitters, Bourbon Maker’s Mark, aromatic bitters and a smoked honey cinnamon syrup – created by Beau, mixologist at Le Blacktail Bar in Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.
