Rum is a particular spirit, it is not, like whisky, very regulated. It’s quite open and the places that can produce rum are varied. Even the ingredients and the method are. Anyway, I learned a lot from this video by Anders Erickson.

He also speaks, at 3:10 p.m., of Appleton Estate rum, which is a blend of two distillation techniques. They combine traditional copper still distillation, which gives the rum its characteristic orange peel top note, and modern column still distillation to create a balanced rum rich in flavour. They don’t hide it either. Some distilleries are unfortunately not as transparent with the contents of their rum, as Mr. Erickson mentions in his video.
