Cloakroom

Bar Le Cloakroom - The best bars for gentlemen in Montréal

There is no menu in this little secret bar, in the Golden Square Mile, created by Andrew Whibley. In its 25-seat space, the bar’s mixologists prepare cocktails to suit your tastes—no two are alike, and that is what we love about this place. It is also very popular, so you may have to be patient to get your foot in, dear gentlemen.

The little brother of the Cloakroom, nestled in the former downtown restaurant of the same name, the place offers food (by chef Pablo Rojas of Provisions) and classic cocktails in a magnificent setting that looks like something out of the 1930s. Certainly, a new classic among the best gentlemen’s bars in Montréal. Take on multiple roadworks and you will be rewarded.

Bootlegger

Rediscovered recently at an event organized in collaboration with Glenfiddich, the Bootlegger is located on the busy boulevard Saint-Laurent, and is a bit of a departure from the rest of the street. Its style seems to have come out of Prohibition, and the employees’ outfits are classic with a modern twist. We go there for its incredible selection of whiskies, but also for its workshops on this delicious liquid. If you are a watch enthusiast, dear gentlemen, owner Christophe will amaze you with his knowledge in this field.

Bar George

Nestling in the Mount Stephen Hotel, Bar George has recently renewed its team (Nader Chabane, Arnaud Bourdy and Nabil Ben El Khattab), and it shows. The cocktails are straighter, the service has improved and the atmosphere is much more pleasant. And some of Montréal’s best mixologists are now here. The only thing we do not like is the DJ and the nightclub atmosphere on certain evenings. The restaurant, expertly run by Kevin Ramasawmy, is a big plus for the place. The team will also be opening the Leo restaurant in the Westin Mont-Tremblant in summer 2024.

Bar Bello

New to Little Italy, Bar Bello is, as you may have guessed, a tribute to Italy. It has become a must for its cocktails. We are a little less keen on the tiny portions of high-priced food compared to the competition, but go there for a cocktail and move over for your meal. There are several options within a stone’s throw, including the very popular Mon Lapin and Ratafia. Do not forget to try their Negroni vending machine, an original and vintage touch.

Nacarat

Always one of our favourites, now under the aegis of Mrs. Claudia Doyon, recipient of the Laurier for Mixologist of the Year in 2022, now brings her local touch to the popular bar at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth. While we are a little less drawn to the Barbie theme now present throughout the hotel, note that this can be interesting if you are there on a first date. Again, we prefer it when the DJ is not playing; otherwise it becomes difficult to talk to each other. But we love the variety of the menu and the products on offer. The Roselys restaurant, just next door, could be your solution after the happy hour.

Le 4e Mur

The hidden bar (better known as a speakeasy) on rue Saint-Denis. This place has been a fixture on the Montreal scene with a winning formula for several years now. Delicious cocktails, a simple and affordable food menu and a 30s theme, with burlesque cabaret shows. It is almost like being at the Moulin Rouge. A successful night out every time. . . if you can find the entrance to one of the best gentlemen’s bars in Montréal.

Whisky Café

Note that the place is temporarily closed for renovations, and we cannot wait to see the changes. You could say that this institution is Montréal’s whisky Mecca, as its name so aptly suggests. Rare and exceptional products, themed tastings, and one of the few cigar rooms in Montréal. What is more, it is the Ardbeg embassy in Montréal, so it is the place to be for smoke lovers. A landmark of choice for Mile End residents.

Another classic that has been standing guard since the late ’80s. This time in the Latin Quarter. Rare whiskies and a relaxed atmosphere are synonymous with this place. Not to mention its wide selection of imported and local beers. We love their terrace in summer.

In Little Burgundy, just a stone’s throw from our next suggestion (how about a 2 for 1?) Here, it is like setting foot in England. Three floors of enjoyment. Here you will find a relaxed atmosphere, exceptional products, tastings of sought-after products throughout their club, not forgetting the exclusive Maker’s Mark bourbons (Adriana and 514), imagined by Mr. Toby Lyle, one of the co-owners of the place, during his visit to the popular Kentucky distillery. Do not hesitate to try their emblematic typically English dishes, which make them one of the best gentlemen’s bars in Montréal.

Here’s a 2nd hidden bar for you gentlemen, but not the least: the Atwater Cocktail Club is run by the great Kate Boushel. She has just been named the winner of the Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award 2024 as part of North America’s 50 Best Bars, the only award given by peers. Before being magnificent, this place is a gem for its cocktails. Its sofas are comfortable, there is plenty of room (although it can be difficult to get in), conversations are easy, and the service is perfect. In short, you are in for a great evening. You can also order food from the Foiegwa restaurant, next door to the bar commonly known as ACC.

Le Coldroom

Follow the duck (in old Montréal) as owner Kevin Demers (who also co-owns the aforementioned Bar Bello) puts it. Here, the atmosphere is less luxurious (they do not call this place The Cold Room for nothing), but it is a great place to meet up. The cocktails are good, the whisky selection is excellent and it is also the little brother of El Pequeño, the smallest bar in Canada, just upstairs where you will find excellent Cubanos. To get in, look for the exit.

What we love about this place is its opening hours. As it is in the hotel lounge, it is open almost all the time. Whether you want a boozy coffee in the afternoon or a Negroni at 5 à 7 or something stronger to finish, you will be served. The tbsp. restaurant is also accessible after your stay in the bar. From Wednesday to Saturday, the bar is more lively, with DJs adding to the atmosphere in this large space. Be warned, this is a party place.
