The Luxury Hotels to Visit in 2022
While most of us still crave the wanderlust, here are a few luxury hotels to visit in 2022. We believe this is a list of necessity for gentlemen. Being a graduate in hotel management, it’s a fascination that has lived with me for years.
St. Regis: history, Luxury & Bloody Mary.
It was in 1904 that John Jacob Astor IV built the St. Regis New York as a sister property to his Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (which we will tell you about below) in co-ownership. Presenting luxury and advanced technology, each room had its own telephone! Interestingly, at his niece’s suggestion, Astor named the new hotel after Upper St. Regis Lake in the Adirondacks. The lake was named in honour of a French Jesuit priest, Jean-François Régis, known for his hospitality to travellers. Ownership changes, a new wing and restorations took place over the following decades. In September 2016, Marriott took ownership of the St. Regis chain as part of its acquisition of the Starwood Group. Note that the brand name cannot be used in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, as the name is legally owned by the independent St. Regis Hotel in Vancouver, built in 1913, which therefore has no link to the chain.
Cocktail lovers, know that in 1934, the famous bartender Fernand Petiot perfected the recipe for a cocktail of vodka and tomato juice, known as Bloody Mary at King Cole Bar in St. Regis New York. Originally called the “Bloody Mary,” the cocktail was renamed the “Red Snapper” so as not to offend the hotel’s refined clientele. Note that the legend also says that this recipe was invented at the Ritz Paris, whose we talk to you below. After more than 80 years, the iconic Bloody Mary remains the signature cocktail of the St. Regis. Each hotel and resort in the St. Regis portfolio has crafted its own unique, locally inspired take on the brand’s signature cocktail. Discover unique recipes from destinations around the world on their site.
St. Regis Toronto, Coming to Canada
The chain’s only hotel in Canada, the one in Toronto, opened in 2018. Soaring 65 stories above Canada’s international enclave for business and culture, the hotel is a beacon on Toronto’s skyline, offering visitors a remarkably central location between the entertainment and financial districts.
A Stone’s throw from major shopping, theatres, workouts and entertainment venues, the hotel places you within minutes of the city’s most distinguished addresses including the CN Tower, Union Station, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Scotiabank Arena, Hudson’s Bay Company and Saks Fifth Avenue, to name a few.
Boasting 258 spacious guest rooms, including 124 luxury suites designed by Chapi Chapo Design—the most suites of any luxury hotel in Canada—modern elegance and bespoke service come together at The St. Regis Toronto. The hotel lobby, designed by DesignAgency, reflects Toronto’s layered and diverse cultural history, the unique landscape of the province of Ontario and the rich social fabric of the people who make up the city.
Located on the 31st floor of our hotel, the opulence and spectacular views of downtown Toronto define the LOUIX LOUIS Grand Bar & Restaurant. Expect an alluring atmosphere and American cuisine with a French twist at our new restaurant, redefining good taste in Toronto. A great opportunity to rediscover the Queen City.

Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, classic luxury hotels
It would be very difficult to miss the Fairmont brand, a luxury brand very present in Canada, since it was previously called Canadian Pacific Hotel and was born at the beginning of the railways in the country. We have already visited and stayed at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac (an article is coming soon), the Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu and the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth. But the brand’s enormous portfolio simply makes us want to travel.
The Savoy and the famous American Bar in London:English elegance
Perfectly located on the River Thames, The Savoy in the heart of all London has to offer. At the forefront of luxury hospitality for over 130 years, The Savoy offers its guests an experience that is constantly evolving to meet the desires of the modern traveller. It was the first purpose-built luxury hotel in London, setting new standards of luxury, comfort and service unparalleled in the hotel world of the time. As the first hotel of its type in the English capital, it was a magnet for the rich, the famous, the glamorous and even the notorious; their stories have accumulated over decades to become part of the legend of this truly unique hotel.
The Savoy’s first famous general manager was legendary hotelier Cesar Ritz. Arrived at the Savoy in 1890, brimming with ideas, tried and tested in fashionable Continental hotels where he had learned what appealed most of the British upper classes spending their summers abroad, one of his first Ritz decrees was that there should always be music in public spaces. “Music,” he said, “covers up awkward gaps in conversation.” Musicians were duly employed and the Savoy was filled with background music, provided mostly by small military-style orchestras, playing the popular hits of the day.
The Savoy has long had a philosophy of “naturally personalized service” and was the first hotel to create its own school to train professionals. Staging an authentically London stay, staff combine efficiency and discretion in a traditional and modern British style of service.
A true testament to the exceptional standards of service provided by the Savoy team, the hotel has been awarded a five-star rating by Forbes Travel Guide 2021. The Savoy received this prestigious recognition for the first time when the ratings list was launched in 2013 and has maintained the five-star rating since that year.
From their butlers to the team at the American Bar (one of the pioneers of cocktail culture that we told you about in the new Fairmont Hotels cocktail menu); from doormen to our florists and wedding planners, every member of the Savoy family is dedicated to making you feel at home, creating unforgettable moments that will last a lifetime.

Fairmont Château Laurier
Coming a little closer to home with the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, one of the luxury hotels to visit in 2022, a few kilometres from the Fairmont Château Montebello, the latter is probably your best base for a romantic getaway with stunning views of the Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill, steps from CFRideau Centre and bustling ByWard Market. The magnificent architecture of the building certainly makes it one, if not the finest hotel in Canada’s capital. You will find newly renovated rooms, which are a fresh and modern addition to the regal elegance of the hotel. Are you looking for exclusivity and luxury? You will appreciate the Fairmont Gold rooms. Located on a private floor, the Fairmont Gold is like a “true hotel within the hotel.”
Recently updated, the hotel’s dining offer offers two magnificent experiences. Wilfrid’s Restaurant offers its guests a vibrant seasonal menu showcasing local and regional ingredients. The flavours are rich, the presentation is crisp, and the service is outstanding. A wide selection of wines is put forward in order to complement the chef’s creations. This magnificent restaurant is more than just a restaurant, it is a dining experience in itself. The second is Zoe’s bar. Rich in history, but with a young heart you can enjoy a cocktail and enjoy light dishes. It’s a captivating bar experience here, with a period feel. Named in honour of Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s wife, Lady Zoe, the place was transformed into a concert/convention hall and then converted into a bar in the late ’80s. It then became the favourite place in Ottawa. Today, this chic and contemporary venue remains as impressive as ever with its grand chandeliers, unique details and original artwork by Karsh. We should not forget its tea service, a must.

The Ritz Paris, the story of the Grands
The hotel was founded by the Swiss hotelier César Ritz, of whom we spoke to you above in The Savoy, in collaboration with the chef Auguste Escoffier, in 1898. The Ritz quickly acquired the reputation of a luxury establishment, having for clientele of political personalities, film stars, singers, etc. Several of its suites are named in honour of prestigious guests of the hotel, for example the great dressmaker Coco Chanel, who lived in the hotel until her death, or the writer Ernest Hemingway, who was a regular customer, especially at the hotel bar that now bears his name.
Settle into your leather armchair in the Hemmingway bar, order one of the legendary cocktails on the menu and raise a toast. If your imagination fails you, just look around you. With only twenty-five seats and no music, this bar has the aura of a very private club—and a place of pilgrimage.
Whatever your choice among the 142 rooms and suites, you will discover a unique elegance at the Ritz Paris and all its history. The style and the grace of the details that occupy the different rooms are breathtaking as you can see the attention of the slightest hitch. Perfection you won’t forget.
The Ritz London, although created by César Ritz is, today, completely independent of the Ritz Paris, just like the Ritz-Carlton chain.

Ritz-Carlton, The Crown of Luxury
We often wonder where the name Ritz-Carlton comes from, it comes from two projects by César Ritz, The Ritz Paris and London, as well as the Carlton Hotel in London. Moreover, the company that built the Ritz-Carlton Montreal was called the Carlton Hotel Company of Montreal, with the idea of giving it the name of the famous Carlton Hotel in London. Incidentally, one of the investors, Charles Hosmer, was a personal friend of César Ritz and persuaded his colleagues to incorporate the Ritz name, due to the success of the Hôtel Ritz Paris which opened in 1898. For a sum of $25,000, César Ritz agrees to lend his name to the Montreal project, but stipulates that in accordance with “Ritz standards,” each room must have its own bathroom; there was to be a kitchen on each floor so that in-room meals could be served dish by dish; and a 24-hour valet and concierge service were to be made available to guests to, among other duties, track lost luggage or order theatre tickets, etc. Finally, the lobby had to be small and intimate but with a grand curved staircase for the ladies to show off their ball gowns as they descended.
In the United States, The Ritz-Carlton Investing Company was created by Albert Keller who bought and franchised the name except for hotels in Montreal and New York (the latter no longer exists). In the early 1900s, several hotels were known as The Ritz-Carlton, in places such as Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlantic City and Boca Raton. However, by 1940, none of the hotels were operating except the Ritz-Carlton Boston (now Taj Boston). The hotel embodies Boston’s finest luxury experience, Yankee ingenuity and social sensibilities. The standards of service, dining and facilities at this Boston landmark set the benchmark for all future Ritz-Carlton hotels and resorts around the world. Unlike other Ritz-Carlton hotels, The Ritz-Carlton Montreal still uses its iconic lion emblem and one of the group’s few properties still standing independently.
The Ritz-Carlton, Boston revolutionized hospitality in America by creating luxury in a hotel setting:
- Private bathroom in each room
- Lighter fabrics in the guest bedroom to allow for more thorough washing
- White tie and apron uniforms for waiters, black tie for Maître d’ and morning suits for all other staff, conducive to a formal and professional appearance
- Many fresh flowers in public areas
- A la carte dining, offering choices for diners
- Gourmet cuisine, using the genius and cooking methods of Auguste Escoffier
- Intimate and smaller lobbies for a more personalized customer experience.
The success of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company caught the attention of the hospitality industry and the brand was purchased by Marriott International in 1998. Since that purchase, The Ritz-Carlton has grown steadily, providing exceptional service and a genuine attention to its customers around the world. In 2000, The Ritz-Carlton Residences opened its first property in Washington, D.C., followed by its first Destination Club property, Aspen Highlands, Colorado in 2001. In addition to dozens of new hotels around the world, in 2008 the company opened the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve property, offering a private sanctuary experience in Phulay Bay, Krabi, Thailand.
Ritz Carlton New York, NoMad, last stop of our luxury hotels to visit in 2022
After the Ritz, the Ritz-Carlton. The latter will open its doors in May 2022, but we can only dream of already staying there. And in the kitchens, it’s the former executive chef of tbsp. from the W Montreal, also from the Marriott group, and from the Café Holt of the Holt Renfrew Ogilvy, Mr. Joris Larigaldie, who accompanies the Michelin-starred chef, José Andrès in this adventure. Knowing the talent of the renowned chef, we will be treated to an exceptional table at the Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad. A great way to wrap up luxury hotels to visit in 2022
