While most of us still crave the wanderlust, here are a few luxury hotels to visit in 2022. We believe this is a list of necessity for gentlemen. Being a graduate in hotel management, it’s a fascination that has lived with me for years.

St. Regis: history, Luxury & Bloody Mary.

It was in 1904 that John Jacob Astor IV built the St. Regis New York as a sister property to his Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (which we will tell you about below) in co-ownership. Presenting luxury and advanced technology, each room had its own telephone! Interestingly, at his niece’s suggestion, Astor named the new hotel after Upper St. Regis Lake in the Adirondacks. The lake was named in honour of a French Jesuit priest, Jean-François Régis, known for his hospitality to travellers. Ownership changes, a new wing and restorations took place over the following decades. In September 2016, Marriott took ownership of the St. Regis chain as part of its acquisition of the Starwood Group. Note that the brand name cannot be used in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, as the name is legally owned by the independent St. Regis Hotel in Vancouver, built in 1913, which therefore has no link to the chain.

Cocktail lovers, know that in 1934, the famous bartender Fernand Petiot perfected the recipe for a cocktail of vodka and tomato juice, known as Bloody Mary at King Cole Bar in St. Regis New York. Originally called the “Bloody Mary,” the cocktail was renamed the “Red Snapper” so as not to offend the hotel’s refined clientele. Note that the legend also says that this recipe was invented at the Ritz Paris, whose we talk to you below. After more than 80 years, the iconic Bloody Mary remains the signature cocktail of the St. Regis. It would be very difficult to miss the Fairmont brand, a luxury brand very present in Canada, since it was previously called Canadian Pacific Hotel and was born at the beginning of the railways in the country. Ritz-Carlton, The Crown of Luxury

We often wonder where the name Ritz-Carlton comes from, it comes from two projects by César Ritz, The Ritz Paris and London, as well as the Carlton Hotel in London. Moreover, the company that built the Ritz-Carlton Montreal was called the Carlton Hotel Company of Montreal, with the idea of ​​giving it the name of the famous Carlton Hotel in London. Incidentally, one of the investors, Charles Hosmer, was a personal friend of César Ritz and persuaded his colleagues to incorporate the Ritz name, due to the success of the Hôtel Ritz Paris which opened in 1898. For a sum of $25,000, César Ritz agrees to lend his name to the Montreal project, but stipulates that in accordance with “Ritz standards,” each room must have its own bathroom; there was to be a kitchen on each floor so that in-room meals could be served dish by dish; and a 24-hour valet and concierge service were to be made available to guests to, among other duties, track lost luggage or order theatre tickets, etc. Finally, the lobby had to be small and intimate but with a grand curved staircase for the ladies to show off their ball gowns as they descended.

In the United States, The Ritz-Carlton Investing Company was created by Albert Keller who bought and franchised the name except for hotels in Montreal and New York (the latter no longer exists). In the early 1900s, several hotels were known as The Ritz-Carlton, in places such as Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlantic City and Boca Raton. However, by 1940, none of the hotels were operating except the Ritz-Carlton Boston (now Taj Boston). The hotel embodies Boston’s finest luxury experience, Yankee ingenuity and social sensibilities. The standards of service, dining and facilities at this Boston landmark set the benchmark for all future Ritz-Carlton hotels and resorts around the world. Unlike other Ritz-Carlton hotels, The Ritz-Carlton Montreal still uses its iconic lion emblem and one of the group’s few properties still standing independently.

Since that purchase, The Ritz-Carlton has grown steadily, providing exceptional service and a genuine attention to its customers around the world. In 2000, The Ritz-Carlton Residences opened its first property in Washington, D.C., followed by its first Destination Club property, Aspen Highlands, Colorado in 2001.
